About Me

Tiffany M. Duffing, PhD

I enjoy helping people move towards fulfilling lives

Since therapist-client “fit” is important, I am pleased to share some information about myself now as well as during our initial meetings. I am the founder of Thriving Life Psychological Services and am a Licensed Clinical Psychologist in the Commonwealth of Virginia. I believe that each one of us is a work-in-progress and that psychotherapy provides a platform for personal development and opportunities to make decisions about life’s experiences. I find it invigorating to help people move away from their struggles and into a life where they experience contentment, satisfaction, and even joy.

I have been providing mental health services to individuals, couples, and families since 2010. These services have been offered in a variety of settings, to include Veteran’s hospitals, community centers, and private practice. My therapy approach varies with each client, but is generally structured, highly supportive, and goal-oriented. I have completed advanced training in Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), Clinical Hypnosis, and Integrative Behavioral Couples Therapy (IBCT). My therapeutic approach is grounded in the highly reputable CBT model and pulls interventions from a variety of effective therapies, depending on the client’s concerns and goals. I work collaboratively with my clients to identify and modify unhelpful patterns, build commitment to ones values, and make choices that produce lasting positive change.

Treating insomnia is an additional area of interest. When working with insomnia, I use a non-medication, short term psychotherapy known as CBT for Insomnia (CBT-I). This treatment has been internationally recognized as the first line of treatment for insomnia and is very effective.

I regularly integrate my therapy dog in training, Dutch, when appropriate. Although my clinical experience is broad, I primarily focus on treating:

  • Anxiety
  • Relationship Distress
  • Child and Adolescent Gastrointestinal (GI) Distress (IBS, FAP, etc.)
  • Insomnia

In addition to my clinical experiences, I am a published author on topics including chronic stress, substance abuse, military suicide, and family risk factors.  I volunteer at local schools and serve on the Executive Board of Northern Virginia Clinical Psychologist (NVCP). I have also worked as an adjunct professor for The Chicago School of Professional Psychology in D.C. and George Mason University.

In my personal time, I enjoy spending time in nature and engaging in activities that help me appreciate the present. I especially like hiking, water sports, and volunteering with service-dogs-in-training who are earmarked for disabled Veterans.
